The standard version of SME server includes...

 
A DHCP domain server to authenticate users in a network environment with secure password logon.

SME premium server
In addition to the features included with the standard version SME premium server has a fully installed PostgreSQL database system.

A database provides a central repository to hold data. One of the advantage's of using a database in a network environment is the security surrounding sensitive information, and the access to different layers of data which can be limited to specific sections of a business.

The premium SME server also comes with an Intranet to display company wide information using the PostgreSQL database system.
Both versions of SME server have built in support for Raid0, Raid1 (disk mirroring), Raid5 and Raid6 with hot spare capability. USB and Tape backup for additional data protection. Virtual private networks with PPTP and Ipsec. Apache web server for web site hosting. Support for up to 250 Windows 2000, XP and Vista work stations. The ability to expand the network with additional servers.
